From the flawless faces I create with makeup to the head-turning hairstyles I design, I take pride in helping people look and feel their absolute best. My artistry goes beyond appearances - I'm a master of semi-permanent brows, a weaver of stories through fashion design, and a culinary artist who can whip up a global feast that will tantalize your taste buds.

But my true power lies not in my skills, but in the overflowing well of kindness that is my heart. Some might call it a weakness, this tendency to love deeply and help without hesitation. Maybe they have a point, but that's just me. My passion can ignite quickly, sometimes coming across as anger, but it stems from a burning desire for justice and a world filled with joyful smiles.

While my childhood wasn't spent directly in the village of Agulu, my family lineage and heritage are deeply rooted there. Here, beneath the warm Anambra sun, I, Chioma, blossomed into the woman I am today.

Family in Igbo culture, the dominant ethnicity in Anambra, is the bedrock of society. This holds true for my family, even though we weren't physically present in Agulu. We find strength and support in our extended families, the "umuన్న (umunna)," meaning "children of the same mother." Respect for elders, known as "ndi nna ukwu (ndi nna ukwu)," is paramount. Their wisdom, guidance, and blessings, passed down through generations, have shaped my life even from afar. My childhood was filled with stories of Agulu, its traditions, and the strong sense of community that thrives there. Family gatherings, though not always in Agulu itself, were fueled by laughter, stories of our ancestral village, and communal meals that might have featured dishes specific to Agulu, like **ofe onugbu** (bitter leaf soup) or **achicha** (peanut butter soup). We celebrated each other's achievements and supported one another through hardships. This deep sense of belonging and responsibility towards my family, especially those who call Agulu home, continues to shape my life.

Anambra culture is steeped in rich traditions that mark significant life events. While I may not have personally witnessed these celebrations unfold in Agulu, they hold a special place in my heart. Perhaps Agulu is known for its energetic **igba kolo dance**, where men and women showcase their agility and grace. I hold a deep respect for these traditions, understanding their importance in preserving not just our cultural identity, but also the specific customs of Agulu, a place I feel a strong connection to even if I wasn't raised there.

It wasn't just about the food, though her **ofe ogbono** (soup with ground melon seeds) could have raised the dead. It was the stories that bubbled along with the pots. Tales of mischievous ancestors, of bravery during hard times, and of unwavering love that bound the family together. Grandma Nneka, with a twinkle in her eye and a knowing smile, would weave these stories into the very fabric of the meal. We learned not just recipes, but also about our family's resilience, resourcefulness, and the importance of gathering around a shared table.

A special place in my heart belongs to my maternal grandmother (God bless her soul). Her skills in the kitchen were unmatched, but even more precious were the lessons she imparted – the importance of family, the love poured into every dish, and the joy of sharing a meal with loved ones. Her legendary abacha (African salad) was a staple at festive occasions, a testament to her love and a reminder of the warmth that filled her kitchen.

Every planting season, a familiar rhythm would course through our family. It wasn't just the changing calendar; it was the call of the land, a call we all answered with a mixture of excitement and anticipation. Traveling home to Nneoha village wasn't just a trip; it was a family tradition, a pilgrimage that reconnected us to our roots and each other. The journey itself was an adventure. We'd pile into a hired truck, siblings squabbling over window seats, the air thick with the promise of new beginnings.

Arriving at Nneoha, the scent of damp earth and the distant hum of communal work would greet us. Here, under the warm Anambra sun, the true magic unfolded. My father, a farmer at heart, would lead the way. We, the younger ones, would mimic his movements, wielding small tools with a mix of seriousness and clumsiness. Our laughter mingled with the rhythmic clanging of hoes against the earth, a symphony of family and labor.

But this tradition wasn't just about hard work. It was about shared purpose, about the deep connection between our family and the land. Following in my father's footsteps, we'd plant a series of things: cassava, okra, yam – each seed entrusted to the soil, a promise of future harvests. Every 3rd of January, we come together for a very special occasion: Ekwelundu's Day. This is a day for all my family members, both home and abroad, to gather and celebrate ourselves and each other. It's a chance to reconnect with distant cousins, share stories with aunts and uncles, and create new memories with the younger generation.
